    miRNAs as Influencers of Cell-Cell Communication in Tumor Microenvironment

    microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level, inducing the degradation of the target mRNA or translational repression. MiRNAs are involved in the control of a multiplicity of biological processes, and their absence or altered expression has been associated with a variety of human diseases, including cancer. Recently, extracellular miRNAs (ECmiRNAs) have been described as mediators of intercellular communication in multiple contexts, including tumor microenvironment. Cancer cells cooperate with stromal cells and elements of the extracellular matrix (ECM) to establish a comfortable niche to grow, to evade the immune system, and to expand. Within the tumor microenvironment, cells release ECmiRNAs and other factors in order to influence and hijack the physiological processes of surrounding cells, fostering tumor progression. Here, we discuss the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of multicomplex diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, obesity, and cancer, focusing on the contribution of both intracellular miRNAs, and of released ECmiRNAs in the establishment and development of cancer niche. We also review growing evidence suggesting the use of miRNAs as novel targets or potential tools for therapeutic applications

    X-ray characterization of innovative semiconductor crystals and study of their applications

    This thesis focuses on experimental work in which X-ray diffraction technique has been used to probe and study the properties of semiconductor crystals for applications in astrophysics and photovoltaics. For the purpose of diffracting high-energy photons for astrophysical observations through a Laue lens, X-ray diffraction has been applied to silicon and germanium curved crystals with the aim to study their structural deformation and diffraction properties. In the framework of “Laue project”, a thorough X-ray characterization has been carried out, allowing accurate adjustment of the experimental parameters for crystal fabrication and certification of its quality of diffraction properties prior to installation as optical element onto the lens. Main experimental results of X-ray diffraction obtained at ESRF are presented and highlight that crystals diffracted photons from 150 to 700 keV with efficiency peaking 95% at 150 keV for Si. With regard to photovoltaics, heteroepitaxial SiGe samples have been investigated by X-ray diffractometry for their usage as multi-junction solar cells

    Tone-in-noise detection deficits in elderly patients with clinically normal hearing

    One of the most common complaints among the elderly is the inability to understand speech in noisy environments. In many cases, these deficits are due to age-related hearing loss; however, some of the elderly that have difficulty hearing in noise have clinically normal pure-tone thresholds. While speech in noise testing is informative, it fails to identify specific frequencies responsible for the speech processing deficit. Auditory neuropathy patients and animal models of hidden hearing loss suggest that tone-in-noise thresholds may provide frequency specific information for those patients who express difficulty, but have normal thresholds in quiet. Therefore, we aimed to determine if tone-in-noise thresholds could be a useful measure in detecting age-related hearing deficits, despite having normal audiometric thresholds

    Growth Kinetics and Sensing Features of Colloidal Silver Nanoplates

    This paper presents the growth mechanisms and the plasmon sensing features for a large class of silver nanoplates obtained in the colloidal form. The synthesis is conducted by seed-mediated growth and leads to plates with aspect ratios as large as 20, having localized surface plasmon resonances extending deeply into the infrared spectral region (1000 nm and above). We measure plasmon sensitivity by varying the colloidal local refractive index, and Δλ/Δn sensitivity values up to 500 nm/RIU are obtained. Theoretical considerations regarding the correlation between the refractive index sensitivity and the position of the main localized plasmon resonance band demonstrate that plasmon sensitivity does not depend directly on the nanoparticle shape and aspect ratio
